🧵 How Denim Is Made (Step-by-Step)

1️⃣ Cotton Selection

  • Denim starts with 100% cotton (or cotton blends).

  • High-quality cotton fibers are cleaned and prepared.

2️⃣ Spinning (Cotton → Yarn)

  • Cotton fibers are carded and combed.

  • Fibers are twisted into strong yarn.

  • Two types of yarn:

    • Warp yarn (for length)

    • Weft yarn (for width)

3️⃣ Indigo Dyeing

  • Warp yarns are dyed using indigo dye.

  • Yarn is dipped multiple times:

    • Dip → air → oxidize → repeat

  • Only the outer layer is dyed → gives denim its fade effect.

4️⃣ Weaving

  • Dyed warp yarns + undyed weft yarns are woven.

  • Denim uses twill weave (3×1).

  • This creates the diagonal pattern you see on jeans.

5️⃣ Fabric Finishing

  • Fabric is washed, softened, or treated.

  • Processes may include:

    • Sanforizing (shrink control)

    • Brushing or enzyme wash

6️⃣ Inspection & Quality Control

  • Fabric is checked for:

    • Color consistency

    • Weaving defects

    • Strength & weight (GSM)

7️⃣ Rolling & Packing

  • Finished denim is rolled into fabric rolls.

  • Packed and shipped to garment factories.

🔵 Why Denim Fades Over Time?

  • Indigo dye stays mostly on the surface.

  • With washing and wear, dye fades → unique aging look.
